California Good Faith Exam FAQ
Does my practice need patient-specific orders in addition to the exam?
Yes. The exam and the order are two halves of one obligation. An exam that doesn’t produce a patient-specific order for the treatment being performed leaves that treatment unsupported.
Can a Good Faith Exam be performed virtually in California?
Yes, when a licensed provider performs it. What matters is a real encounter and an order written for that patient and that treatment.
Does a returning patient need a new exam?
Not every visit. A new exam is required before a first treatment, and again when the treatment plan or the patient’s condition changes materially. Best practice is to have each patient reviewed every 12 months or whenever there has been a significant change in the patient’s health history.
